![]() (however last week I did pull an ethernet card to use elsewhere, which could have influenced something) My motherboard apparently uses an RTL8111H, according to the manual. I have tried to uninstall the r8168 driver and then it doesn’t work anymore. Then simply replace the names in the first xrandr command above. If you wonder how you can adapt it for your displays, first you need to get the names of the monitors with this command (the names are on the last column): $ xrandr -listmonitors You can bind the above command to a keyboard shortcut or create an alias for it. That being said, you can use xrandr on any DE to force the sequence the displays are arranged in with a command like this: xrandr -output eDP-1 -mode 1920x1080 -output DP-1 -auto -primary -right-of eDP-1 -output DP-2 -auto -right-of DP-1 With a bit of customization you can make XFCE look great: The monitors remember their settings when i reconnect them after a disconnect. ![]() It works great even if one of the monitors is connected via USB-c hub. I’m running XFCE with two monitors connected to the laptop. I’ve read XFCE does a better job with multiple monitor setups, which I haven’t properly tried yet. I also do like plasma, but I can’t keep using it if I can’t fix the issue with multiple monitors. As an alternative which other DE can I try, which supposedly work better with multiple monitors?ĭon’t misunderstand me, my overall experience is positive otherwise I haven’t been using it for a couple of weeks already.Do you have an idea how and if the plasma issue can be fixed?.This is also a easy moment to click to boxes of the other DE’s and start without al the things I installed to try out and don’t need. So I will probably, just reinstall the new iso when it releases, because nothing gets lost by doing so atm. I did make it usable for now, by disabling the monitors to go to sleep and disconnection the cable to the TV, but it is not what I want.Īnyways, I’m going to moving everything to another ssd. I’m not the only one having a weird story, I’ve read multiple similar things even going back 2 years. ![]() If i than which to another monitor being primary, it just shuffles whatever is on it around and doing it enough times somehow gets it on the right screen again. Interesting is when this happens the monitors are still 0, 1, 2, which 1 is still primary. If it comes back from a sleeping display or if I turn on another display (3) (in this case a 4k TV where I play my media on) it decides to move taskbar to another display (also which one is different every time) or sometimes completely disappears and it changes the wallpaper and lockscreen, sometimes. If I set display 1 as primary, which contains a couple of files and the taskbar. After it goes to sleep or an extra monitor is connected, it fucks up my configuration, which I haven’t been able to figure out. The real issue, the multiple monitors is becoming a real problem.Which is weird because the speaker also has a microphone, on which I can switch the profiles, aka it has same functionality as the headphones. Only not yet for my XM3 headphones, for some reason. But after switching to pipewire it did work, almost imminently. Bluetooth audio, the audio quality sucked, I could no get it working in A2DP with pulseaudio.Rebinding the keys, for now xmodmap will do the trick. Now my weird things, I always use rebinded keys, all bluetooth audio and a multiple monitor setup. ![]() And most importantly I can often find the setting I want without using google, eg in gnome I cant find anything. I also like the default application launcher a lot, it shows what the applications do, which is very useful for now because all the applications have different names. The desktop measurement of choice is KDE Plasma, I just set the theme to Dracula and configure the taskbar. eg disable updates for the r8168 driver, for now it works, but when it updates the network doesn’t work. I eventually decided on Endeavour, I did run into updates which broke things, but figuring out how to fix it was quick. I haven’t posted on the forum before, so it did become a bit of a story.Ī couple of week ago, I decided to really switch away from windows I need to use it as an daily OS and have windows when i need certain software.

![]() Although numerous studies have confirmed social differentiation in highbrow cultural consumption, cross-national research on social inequality in the cultural domain is still scarce. Participation in highbrow culture for individuals is often recognized as an important but unequally distributed asset. Lastly, I find that the social prestige perceived through consuming highbrow culture becomes an important predictor of who consumes highbrow culture. Furthermore, I show that highbrow cultural consumption is affected by specific country characteristics. Using Eurobarometer (2007) data, I show that taste publics have distinct highbrow cultural consumption scores and the association between taste publics and highbrow cultural consumption varies across Europe. I further test the extent to which the association between taste publics and highbrow cultural consumption is moderated by these country characteristics. I examine the extent to which taste publics and specific country characteristics such as a country’s population characteristics, its wealth, and its level of cultural funding affect highbrow cultural consumption across European countries. I contribute to the existing body of knowledge by focusing on taste publics-groups of individuals distinguished by their levels of economic and cultural capital-rather than separately dealing with education and family affluence. Although numerous studies have confirmed this association by using education and income as proxies of cultural and economic capital in highbrow cultural consumption at the individual level, cross-national comparisons remain scarce. The association between class and culture as an important way to understand the determinants of individual tastes is well-known. ![]() Val bw = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(result_sink)) Val result_sink = new File("results.txt") Val fixed_file = omFile("fixed_width_data.txt") I pretty much want to follow the same logic I did with Python, read in a plain text file, bring in all the lines, then slice the column values out of that single string and write it all back out to a file. I will do my best, which isn’t saying much. I’m terrible at Scala but I am curious if this would be significantly faster re-written with Scala. I know 8 seconds doesn’t seem like a long time, but what if instead of 3.4 million records we had 20 million, and instead of 13 columns we had 113, plus multiple files. Just read the file in a a bunch of lines of text, then using the known spacing, or fixed width of each column, string slice out the value and trim down the white space.īelow is a sample of the results.csv we wrote the records back out too. There is nothing particularly special about the Python code, nice and simple. You can see the output file is pretty much like our original files, we converted the fixed with values back into a more normal csv file again. def read_with_csv(file_loc: str):Ĭsv_reader = csv.reader(csv_file, delimiter=',')ĭef read_file_return_records(file_loc: str) -> iter: Let’s process in Python and see how long it takes to convert this fixed width file back to CSV. Each record is is 45 characters long, for 13 columns. We now have a single file with 3,489,760 lines and 13 columns. You can see below the file turns out in a fixed width format. What I’m doing above is reading in the all the csv files, creating each record with 50 spaces tacked onto it, then slicing it back down to 45 characters and writing out the line. With open('fixed_width_data.txt', 'w') as f:Ĭonvert_csv_to_fixed_width(delimited_files) delimited_files = [ĭef convert_csv_to_fixed_width(files: list): We also going to pretend like they are all a single file for arguments sake. We are going to use the Divvy Bike trip data set, I downloaded 21 CSV files and pretend like they are fixed with delimited files. Converting CSV files into Fixed Width nightmares. Also, since you could have hundreds of columns and millions of records in a single file … how do you apply distributed computing to such a problem, since only one machine can read one file at a time? This is a problem.įirst, let’s just compare Python vs Scala vs Spark in this simple string slicing operation, see who can process file(s) the fastest, and then try to think outside the box on how we might solve this problem more creatively. Why? Because you have to read every row and use your poor CPU to figure out each data point. And when you have 100+ columns and many millions of rows, this becomes an intensive process. The problem with files like this is that string slicing, which is pretty basic, becomes one of the only obvious ways of breaking down these delimited files into individual data points to be worked on. Behold the most terrible and evil flat file ever devised by mankind. ![]() So in the above example the first column starts at position 0 and goes until 8, the second column starts to 9 and goes until 26 …. I mean even the pipe delimiter, |, between column values is better then nothing ….Īll this means is that between records in the file, there is a fixed number of spaces, that can be different between records. Normally most plain text and flat files that data is exported in might be csv with commas delimited records, I mean of course their is the ever present and strange tab delimited files with the ole \t. I ran into a problem recently where PySpark was surprisingly terrible at processing fixed with delimited files and “string slicing.” It got me wondering … is it me or you? Fixed width delimited text files. The one you should fear the most is fixed width delimited files. Hence string work comes upon us all like some terrible overload. Plain text and flat files are still incredibly popular and common for storing and exporting data between systems. ![]() ![]() I blame this mostly on the data and old schools companies. Evidence Disproving Myth Hypothesis It is false that the 'dark side' of the moon never faces the sun. But all of that data comes from the side of the moon that faces Earth. Data from the Apollo missions had already revealed that the moon's sunlit surface can climb to 260 degrees Fahrenheit (127 degrees Celsius) during the day, and drop to minus 280 F (minus 173 C) at night. These periods are about two Earth-weeks long. It seems that she transitioned you into the American film world pretty seamlessly. It feels a bit crazy, like I can’t really believe it. Accruing a win for Best Actress at the Gotham Awards and a BAFTA nom for the Rising Star Award, among a slew of other nominations, Powley’s is a voice that demands to be heard, and is as eloquent and powerful in conversation as on screen. ![]() Searingly truthful in content and dazzlingly imaginative in form, The Diary of a Teenage Girl is a candid and funny gem that deserves to be treasured. With her first American role as Minnie in Marielle Heller’s The Diary of a Teenage Girl, an adaptation of Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel, British actress Bel Powley has exploded onto the scene as one of the most exciting young talents to watch, subsequently booking major roles in some highly-anticipated independent films by the likes of Drake Doremus and Haifaa Al-Mansour. It's an unflinching yet compelling transition that manages to avoid the usual rites-of-passage storytelling clichés. These childlike drawings offer an insight into her turbulent mind and also help to juxtapose the central tussle between her child self and increasingly dominant adult self. While the portrayals are utterly convincing, the film's visual nature forms a fascinating contrast by bringing Minnie's sketches to life around her. If there's justice, the trio should be in the running when the awards season comes around.īoasting powerful performances from its lead stars, wonderfully creative direction and a story that will have you howling with laughter and recoiling with horror, it's a film that really resonates. As her mother and lover, Wiig and Skarsgård are also perfect, forming fascinating dynamics with Minnie that unfold with just the right degree of melodrama. Bel Powley is remarkably assured in a very testing role that frequently strips the character bare - literally and figuratively. The film's only notable flaw comes with the introduction of ineffective subplots that shift the focus away from the central storyline, distracting rather than embellishing the core narrative that hooks us in.Īs an exploration of the insecurities that swamp our adolescence, it's as relevant now regardless of its authentically recreated 1970s setting. Instead, it probes their motivations and allows us to understand (if not condone) the psychological impulses that lead to such behaviour. Marielle Heller's script and direction takes us close to the hearts of the characters, never judging them despite some of the unpleasant and illegal acts that take place. |
